Drivers and pedestrians passing the construction site on the corner of Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Andalusia in Coral Gables will be treated to an unexpected art experience. An eight-foot tall plywood barrier stretching along for a half block has been decorated with a painting of carousel horses by noted Venezuelan artist Arturo Correa.

"I believe this is the first mural to be created in downtown Coral Gables," said Virginia Miller, owner and director of ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries.

Long a mainstay of the South Florida art community, Miller was asked by representatives of Hines, an international real estate firm, to find someone to add an artistic touch to a functional but otherwise bleak wall. ...

Arturo Correa begins the layout of the 125-foot mural, thought to be the first artwork of its kind in downtown Coral Gables.

Correa confers with gallery owner Virginia Miller, who proposed the mural to Hines, an international real estate developer. Miller has commissioned a number of outdoor art works, including two of the nation’s largest public-scale bronze sculptures.

By the third day the mural is completely drawn and the artist, assisted by his wife and his mother, has begun to add color to the drawn elements.

On the fourth day Correa completes details of the carousel horses, paints in the colorful background and adds garlands of flowers streaming from the architectural details.

Virginia Miller joins the artist in reviewing the completed 125-foot-long mural on the fifth day. Its carousel horses, a metaphor for the various phases of our lives, enliven the neighborhood with their striking colors and suggested motion.
