Has art become globalized? Do you believe in the globalization of art? VM: Globalization of art is a fact of life. Just look at the number of new museums and galleries exhibiting art from the far corners of the world, art that ten years ago could be found only in a few select venues. Moreover, the works themselves are exhibiting a trans-nationalism that reflects a global viewpoint. The commerce of art, of course, continues to become more global through the near-universality of e¬mail, web sites, and international contemporary art fairs. As the new media proliferate around the world, the incredible diversity of fine art has never been more exciting!

Do you consider that painting continues to be a valid and powerful medium?

VM: The creative spirit that drives artists undoubtedly will continue pushing the esthetic envelope, and traditional painting will not be excluded from artistic innovation. I envision an eventual evolution of painting into a syncretism of video, photographic, digital and painterly techniques and multimedia formats beyond the limits of our imagination. Digital-age techniques notwithstanding, for the moment I suspect that most people will prefer works that offer comfortably familiar frames of reference, stylistically and in terms of subject matter. For the more esthetically sophisticated, painting will segue into more innovative forms, perhaps as digitally originated multimedia or holographic performances.

What is the currrent position of Latin American art in terms of international recognition?

VM: In recent years, Latin American art has become a keystone of museum exhibitions and of university art departments. More and more institutions are establishing departments and curators of Latin American art. In part, this may be a natural response to our skyrocketing population of families whose origins are from Latin America, but I think it also is in recognition of our past neglect of the exciting and incredibly diverse panoply of art that falls into the category we call Latin American.
In Miami, a number of galleries have opened that are owned by Latin Americans and that specialize in Latin American art. In view of the region's political instability and shifting demographics, this could be an ongoing trend.

El arte ¿está globalizado?
¿Cree usted en la globalización del arte?

VM: La globalizacion del arte es un hecho de la vida. Basta con ver la cantidad de nuevos museos y galerias que exhiben arte de rincones remotos del mundo, arte que diez anos atras solo podia encontrarse en unos pocos lugares selectos. For otra parte, las mismas obras muestran un transnacionalismo que refleja un punto de vista global. El comercio de arte se vuelve cada vez mas global a traves de la cuasi universalidad del correo electronico, los sitios web, y las ferias internacionales de arte contemporaneo. A medida que los nuevos medios proliferan en todo el mundo, la increible diversidad de las artes visuales se torna cada vez mas apasionante.

¿Considera usted que sigue vigente la pintura?

VM: El espiritu creativo que impulsa a los artistas sin duda continuara expandiendo la cubierta estetica y la pintura tradicional no sera ajena a la innovacion artistica. Yo imagino una eventual evolucion de la pintura hacia un sincretismo de tecnicas de video, fotograficas, digitales y pictoricas y formatos multimedia que van mas ally de los limites de nuestra imaginacion. A despecho de las tecnicas de la era digital, por el momento sospecho que la mayoria de las personas preferiria obras que ofreciesen marcos de referenda confortablemente familiares, tanto desde el punto de vista del estilo como del tema a tratar. Para aquellos esteticamente mas sofisticados, la pintura experimentara una transicion suave hacia formas mas innovadoras, tal vez una multimedia originada digitalmente o alguna performance holografica.

¿Qué lugar ocupa hoy el arte latinoamericano en el mundo?

VM: En anos recientes, America Latina se ha convertido en la piedra angular de las exposiciones en museos y de los departamentos de arte de las universidades. Mas y mas instituciones estan creando departamentos y nombrando curadores de arte latinoamericano. En parte, esta puede ser una respuesta natural al impresionante aumento de pobacion constituda por familias de origen latinoamericano, pero creo que tambien puede ser una compensacion por nuestro anterior desinteres por la excitante e increiblemente variada panoplia de arte que se ubica dentro de la categoria que denominamos arte latinoamericano. En Miami, se han abierto una cantidad de galerias cuyos propietarios son latinoamericanos y que se especializan en arte de Latinoamerica. En vista de la inestabilidad politica de la region y de su cambiante demografia, esta podria ser una tendencia progresiva.
