Biography
Hugo Crosthwaite’s solo exhibitions
in Mexico and the United States include “Maniera Obscura
/In a Dark Manner,” ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries,
Coral Gables (Miami), Florida, March–May 2005; “Tablas
de una Novena” at Tijuana’s Cultural Center (CECUT)
in 2000; “Urbe Tenebrosa” at Tijuana’s
State Gallery in 2001, “On the Border of Surrealism” at
Daniel Saxon Gallery, Los Angeles in 2002, and “Caprichos” at
Trópico de Nopal, Los Angeles, in 2004.
The artist’s works have also been included in a number
of collective exhibitions throughout the United States and
Mexico. In 2004 his work was included in the “XII Bienal
Rufino Tamayo” at the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo
in Mexico City, and “Mujeres de Juárez: Art
Against Crime,” an exhibition of works by artists protesting
the violence against women in Juarez, Mexico.
Other group exhibitions from 2004
include “Art at
War,” initially shown at Aldo Castillo Gallery, Chicago,
and later at Chicago State University, and “Likeness
and Presence: Contemporary Religious Expressions” at
Galería Otra Vez, Self-Help Graphics, Los Angeles.
In 2003 Hugo was commissioned by the
City of Los Angeles to participate in the mural project, “The Wall–Las
Memorias,” a monument created to educate the Latino
Community about cultural denial and HIV/AIDS, and an effort
to eternally honor loved ones who have died of AIDS. The
artist has also been commissioned to create several book
covers.
